MOLINE, Ill. -- After a 3-2 loss in the opener, the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team got an 8-6 win in the second game to earn a split of a doubleheader at Augustana College on Friday, April 29, at Swanson Stadium in Moline, Ill.
The Titans are 19-15 overall and Augustana is 23-12 with both teams holding 11-6 records in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. North Central has 1/2 game lead in the CCIW with an 11-5 record after a 5-1 loss at Elmhurst Friday.
IWU got only six hits in the opener as senior first baseman
Matthew Mardis and junior catcher
Pat Mollo each had two singles. Junior
Sean Coonan started the game and scattered six hits in 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run.
Brian Henry (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing one run on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.
The Titans, who were outhit 14-9, put up a five-spot in the third inning to take an early lead in the second game. Mollo had three hits with a double and Mardis knocked home a pair of runs with a single in the third. Junior shortstop
Jarrod Juskiewicz had a single and a double with two runs batted in.
Righthander
Louis Acklin (2-1), the third of five Illinois Wesleyan pitchers, got the win and
Matt Banaitis pitched two innings of two-hit shutout ball to close out the game and earn his first save. Starting pitcher
Nick Huskisson was chased after allowing five runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
What's Next?
The poor weather forecast for Saturday has led Illinois Wesleyan and Augustana to postpone the scheduled game until Monday, May 2, at Horenberger Field with a first pitch time to be deternined.
