BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- A total of five runs and 13 hits by the two teams meant excellent pitching as the Illinois Wesleyan softball team split a pair of games against Wisconsin-Whitewater on Tuesday, April 19, at IWU Softball Field in Bloomington.
The No. 8-ranked Titans lost game one by a 2-1 score befiore coming back to win the nightcap, 2-0. IWU is now 24-6 this season while the Warhawks are 19-10.
In game one, IWU was limited to singles by seniors
Sam Gudat and
Cassidy Tarpey and scored one unearned run against Julia Camardo. Senior
Jenna Noland (10-3) allowed just four hits but walked five and allowed a solo fourth inning home run to Morgan Parise.
In game two, the Titans got two-hit shutout pitching from sophomore
Mackenzie Marquis (12-3), who struck out three and walked three. IWU jumped ahead with a run in the first when freshman
Jillian Runyon singled, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored an unearned run on a passed ball. IWU tacked on their second run when senior
Mary Rankin had a one-out single and went to third on
Danielle Smith's double to rightfield. Rankin scored when Tarpey laid down a bunt down the third base line.
The stolen base for Runyon was her 31st of the season and sets a new Illinois Wesleyan mark, topping the 30 steals by Kelly Kramer (30-for-30 in 1989) and Nicole Williams (30-for-35 in 2001).
