BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- With a 75-69 win over Elmhurst, the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team won a share of its seventh College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship at the Shirk Center on Saturday, Feb. 20.
The win gives Illinois Wesleyan a 16-9 overall record and an 11-3 mark in the CCIW, tied with Wheaton. The No. 21-ranked Thunder came from behind at home to top Augustana 67-57, are 20-5 overall and will host next weekend's conference postseason tourney.
Illinois Wesleyan will meet No. 3 seed North Centrel in the first game Friday and Wheaton will host No. 4 seed Elmhurst. The winning teams will play Saturday with the champion earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III championship tournament.
The Titans have won the CCIW regular season championship in 2003 and every year from 2008 to 2012 and also won the CCIW postseason tournament in each of those seasons. IWU has a 16-5 record in CCIW postseason play.
Against Elmhurst, Illinois Wesleyan got 19 points from both sophomore
Rebekah Ehresman and junior
Gabrielle Holness while sophomore
Molly McGraw added 15 and freshman
Maddie Merritt scored 11.
Mikaela Eppard scored 18 points and snared a game-high eight rebounds as the Bluejays outrebounded IWU 34-32. Kaela Jones added 17 points for Elmhurst.
With 4:15 to play in the game, IWU trailed 64-59 and the game was tied at 66-66 with 2:32 to play. Junior
Amanda Kelly made two late steals that led to four IWU points (basket by Kelly and two free throws by Merritt) that staked IWU to a 71-66 lead with 1:13 left. Three free throws from Holness and one from Ehresman sealed the contest.
The Titans scored 39 points off 28 Elmhurst turnovers and were guilty of 16 turnovers.
