Titans Take Pair vs. Millikin in CCIW Contests

DECATUR, Ill. - The No. 6-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team took five innings to get a 14-3 win in the first game before taking an 8-0 five inning win in game two of a doubleheader to sweep Millikin at Borg Warner Field on Tuesday, April 21.

The Titans improved to 27-7 overall and 6-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Big Blue slipped to 13-21 overall and 2-8 in the CCIW.

Senior Chloe Montgomery (15-3) gave up three runs on six hits and pitched a complete game win that saw IWU get jump out to an 8-0 lead after two innings before plating another six runs in the fith to force a run rule into effect. Junior shortstop Sam Gudat led off the game with a solo home run to left field to go along with a double in her two-for-four effort at the plate. Mary Rankin had three hits in game one, scoring three times and driving in two Titan runs while Laura Bonds went two-for-four and swiped two bags on the base path. 

Game two saw Illinois Wesleyan junior righthander Jenna Noland (6-1) toss a one-hitter  with the lone hit coming as a double in the top of the second inning. Noland allowed only two other baserunners coming off of a walk and fielding error while striking out a season-high 12. 

IWU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when sophomore Katie Caulfield singled home Rankin, who had a hit in all three at-bats in the game including a solo home run in the fourth. Leading 2-0 after three innings, the Titans broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. IWU would end the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Summer Stitt would score off a Gudat single to put a run rule into effect. 

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan will host Elmhurst on Saturday, April 25th at IWU in a doublheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The Titans are tied for second in the CCIW with North Central and sit one game ahead of the Bluejays in the loss column.
