IWU Loses Late Lead, Game at Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. -- The Illinois State Redbirds baseball team scored four runs in the last of the eighth inning to overcome a 5-3 deficit and post a 7-5 win over Illinois Wesleyan in the annual Horenberger-Bass Classic at Duffy Bass Field on Tuesday, April 21.

The Titans are 20-10 overall while the Redbirds are 19-18.

Illinois Wesleyan had nine hits in the game with six coming from the top three in the batting order as senior Tim Coonan, senior Derek Idstein and sophomore catcher Pat Mollo each had two. Mollo had a double and a sacrifice fly and accounted for four runs batted in.

IWU got three runs in the third to go on top 3-1 on a run-scoring single by Idstein and a two-RBI single by Mollo.

Reliever Louis Acklin (0-3), the eighth of nine Titan hurlers in the game, took the loss as he allowed two runs on two hits with a balk. One of those hits was a home run by ISU second baseman Paul DeJong, his 13th of the season.

NOTES: The first pitches were thrown out by the son and daughter (Jack and Kate) of 1991 Illinois Wesleyan graduate and former baseball and basketball player Jason Jones, who perished in a plane crash east of Bloomington on April 7 ... This was the 156th baseball meeting of the Bloomington-Normal rivals since 1890 and ISU has an 86-70 lead in the series. The Redbirds have won seven of nine games since the rivalry was renewed in 2004 after several years of not playing.
