Noland Shutout Salvage Split for IWU in CCIW Pair

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Illinois Wesleyan junior Jenna Noland threw a complete game, three-hit shutout to earn a 3-0 win in game two of a pair against North Central at IWU Field on Saturday, April 18, helping the Titans to a split after a 7-3 setback in game one.

The No. 6 ranked Titans are now 25-7 overall and 4-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the No. 10-ranked Cardinals are now 23-3 overall and 8-2 in CCIW play.

Noland improved to 5-1 as she struck out 10 in the contest. The Titans backed her with two unearned runs in the fourth on a sacrifice bunt by Chloe Montgomery that scored pinch runner Megan O'Donnell and a single by freshman Amanda Lack that brought in junior Mary Rankin.

IWU added a run in the seventh when junior Laura Bonds doubled to right and came home two batters later on Rankin's single to center.

In game one, IWU and the Cardinals were tied at 2-2 when North Central put up five runs in the fifth with the big blow a grand slam homer by pitcher Andrea Starr (14-2). Starr, who was also the loser in game two with a complete game, allowed five hits and struck out one in earning the win.

IWU got two hits from Bonds and one each from junior shortstop Sam Gudat, junior catcher Danielle Smith and Montgomery, who was the losing pitcher and saw her record fall to 14-3. She pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Mackenzie Marquis allowed two hits and fanned three in the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

What's Next?
The Titans head north to face CCIW opponent Carthage in Kenosha, Wis., on Sunday, April 19 with a 12 noon start for the doubleheader. The Lady Reds are 10-18 this season and 2-6 in the conference.
