No. 8 Titans Split Pair With Maroons

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The No. 8-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team posted a 7-1 win in the opener before losing 4-1 in the nightcap at the Univeristy of Chicago on Monday, April 13.

The Titans are 23-5 and the Maroons are 11-13 after the pair of games. The games were originally scheduled for last Thursday before inclement weather postponed them to Monday afternoon.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first game, the Titans put up three runs in the third, one in the fifth and added three runs in the sixth to the game out of reach.

Freshman left fielder Summer Stitthad two hits in three plate appearances and scored twice while junior catcher Danielle Smithhad two hits with two runs batted in. Junior shortstop Sam Gudat was one of three Titans to record an extra-base hit when she smacked a first-inning double before junior Mary Rankin and designated hitter Cassidy Tarpey would also record two-baggers.

FreshmanMackenzie Marquis(5-1) was the winning pitcher, throwing four innings while giving up one run on three hits and striking out three. Senior Chloe Montgomery picked up the save in relief, pitching three innings of shutout softball on three hits and striking out three.

In game two the Maroons plated one run in the bottom of the third to tie the score at one before pushing three runs across in the bottom of the fifth to knock junior pitcher Jenna Noland(4-1) out of the game. Noland went four-plus innings, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out five. Sophomore Megan O'Donnell (two-thirds of an inning) and freshman Stephanie Prentice (one and one-third innings) both saw action in relief for the Titans.

IWU would be limited to five hits in the game, with no Titan recording more than one hit. Maggie Graham would start the top of the third off with a double to right center and come around to score off of a Gudat bunt single and Maroon error. Senior Hannah Bowen would record the only other extra-base hit for the Titans when she blasted a triple to right field in the fifth-inning.

What's Next?
The Titans have a quick turnaround and will play at home on Tuesday, April 14, hosting DePauw College for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. Tuesday's games are designated as "Military Service/Veterans" day recognizing those currently serving and veterans from each branch of the military.The Titans willbe wearing camouflage uniforms and batting helmets to show support for our veterans and honor their service anda 50/50 raffle and donations will be accepted during both games to benefit the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which serves U.S. military personnel wounded or injured in service to our nation, and their families.
