Box Score 2 BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Freshman Mackenzie Marquis (pictured) came on in relief to pitch and pick up the win in game one before throwing a no-hitter to lead No. 6-ranked Illinois Wesleyan to a pair of wins over Wisconsin-Stevens Point at the IWU Softball Field on Sunday, March 29.The two wins give the Titans a record of 16-2 overall and Marquis is 3-0. She came on in relief with two outs in the fourth to relieve Chloe Montgomery in game one and threw three and one-third innings of shutout softball, allowing only two hits to earn the win. The Herscher, Ill. native then hurled a complete-game no-hitter, striking out six while walking four.It marks the 12th no-hitter in school history (since 2003), and is the first time an IWU pitcher has accomplished the feat since current IWU senior
Chloe Montgomery pitched a perfect game against Wheaton (Mass.) on March 14, 2013. Sunday also marked the first seven-inning no-hitter by an IWU pitcher since May 7, 2009, When Christy Engel pitched a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over St. Norbert in an NCAA Division III Regional game.
In game one against the Pointers (6-11), Illinois Wesleyan scored three in the third before Stevens Point would respond with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth. IWU would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore third baseman Katie Caulfield hit a double to left field scoring Mary Rankin.Montgomery hit her second home run of the year, and Caulfield was the only Titan with multiple hits (2). Sam Gudat (1) and Hannah Bowen (1) batted in the other two Illinois Wesleyan runs in the win.IWU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, before letting Marquis shut down the Pointers. The Titans would get one run in the bottom of the first when Danielle Smith grounded into a double play, scoring Gudat. Gudat would then come up in the bottom of the second and smack a two-RBI double to the fence to score Maggie Graham and Amanda Lack.
Both Lack and Gudat went two-for-three while Laura Bonds, Bowen, Smith and Montgomery all recorded one hit in game two.What's Next?Illinois Wesleyan travels to Whitewater, Wis. to face the No. 5-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks in a doubleheader on Monday, March 30. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
