Men's Lacrosse Edges Olivet 13-12

OLIVET, Mich. - Trailing 9-8 after three quarters, the Illinois Wesleyan men's lacrosse team got five final period goals and held off a late charge to defeat Olivet College 13-12 on Saturday, March 21 at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

The Titans improved to 4-4 this season while the Comets dropped to 1-5.

Nick Winter led the Titans with five goals while Tim Smithhad three goals with two assists. Other IWU goals came from Colin Daly, Michael Julius, and Alex Lambert. Winter, Smith, Daly, Lambert, Nick Kruchko and James Maibuecherall had assists.

Winter would start the game by scoring the first two goals after nine minutes of action without a goal by either team. Olivet would respond with a goal of their own to end the first period before outscoring the Titans 4-2 in the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead into halftime.Both IWU and Olivet would score four goals each in the third period for the Comets to maintain a one goal lead before Titans would score five fourth quarter goals including two from Winter and Daly to edge the Comets.


IWU outshot Olivet, 37-33, and had 39 ground balls to 36 for the Comets . IWU held a decisive 22-7 lead in faceoffs but were guilty of 18 turnovers compared to 15 by Olivet. The Titans were 1 for 3 in extra-man opportunities while Olivet was 0 for 1.

Mark Dezellmade seven saves in 45 minutes of action in goal while sophomore Steven Laduzinsky played15 minutes in goal, making four saves.

Illinois Wesleyan has a quick turnaround, hosting Cornell College on Monday, March 23 at 7 p.m. at Tucci Stadium.
