No. 6 Titans Sweep Blugolds, 2-1 and 3-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The No. 6-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team won their 2015 home-opening doubleheader against Wisconsin-Eau Claire 2-1 and 3-1 at the IWU softball field on Thursday, March 19. 

The Titans improved to 10-1 with the pair of victories while the Blugolds slipped to 1-5

IWU won game one in walk-off fashion when junior Danielle Smith singled home Sam Gudat to give the Titans the 2-1 victory. With one out, Gudat was walked. Hannah Bowen then reached on an error after a bunt attempt and stole second to allow the Blugolds to intentionally walk junior second baseman Laura Bonds before Smith pulled a pitch through the left side of the infield for the win.  

Senior lefthander Chloe Montgomery improved to 8-0, pitching a complete game giving up one run on four hits while striking out three. 

The bats woke up in game two for the Titans, recording nine hits and taking advantage of three Blugold errors. IWU took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Gudat led off with a double and scored on an Eau Claire error fielding a Bowen sacrifice bunt. The Blugolds would tie the game at one in the top of the fifth before Smith again would be the hero by launching a two-run home run to center field to give the Titans a 3-1 lead. Ill. Junior Jenna Noland picked up her first win of the season pitching for the Titans, giving up one unearned run on two hits while striking out three. 


What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan will take part in the Washington University tournament on Sunday, March 22 in St. Louis. The No. 6 Titans will take on Buena Vista University at 2 p.m. before facing the No. 18 host Bears at 4 p.m.
