BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Trailing 1-0 in the second half, the Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team scored three goals to win their 2015 non-conference finale against Hannibal-LaGrange University 3-1 at Neis Field on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
IWU is now 5-4-2 overall with the victory while the Trojans fell to 5-4-2 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
After ceding a goal just nine minutes into the game, the Titans would put up seven first half shots without finding a way to put one past the Hannibal-LaGrange goalkeeper. Following halftime, Ill. Wesleyan knotted the score at one in the 54th minute (53:26) when
Mitch Billimack scored his fourth goal of the season off a
Blake Tempel Assist. IWU would take the lead at the 77:44 mark when
Brendan McCoy scored his first goal of the year when the Trojan goalie misplayed a deflection that went right to McCoy in front of the net. Just two minutes later (79:19)
Drake Leary put the game out of reach by finding the back of the net off a Billimack cross from the right side.
IWU outshot Hannibal-LaGrange 23-14 and held a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Trojans held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Erick Eklin made the start in goal for the Titans, playing the entire first half while making four saves.
Craig Kym picked up the victory in net for Ill. Wesleyan, playing the final 45 minutes while making one save.
What's Next?IWU hosts Carthage College on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. as part of homecoming weekend. The Red Men are 6-4-1 heading into this week and 1-0 in the CCIW after defeating North Central 1-0 in overtime last Saturday.
