No. 16 Titans Improve to 7-0, 4-0 CCIW With Win

ELMHURST, Ill. -- The No. 16-ranked Illinois Wesleyan football team got three fourth quarter touchdowns to snap a 28-28 tie and put away Elmhurst, 49-28, at Langhorst Field in Elmhurst on Saturday, Oct. 24.
 
Illinois Wesleyan is now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The Titans were also 7-0 in 2013 for the first time since 1996 before losing at home to North Central, 46-17. With four straight losses, the Bluejays are 3-4 overall and 0-4 against the league.
 
Illinois Wesleyan has now outscored opponents, 78-0, in the fourth quarter of games and by a 277-110 margin overall.
Against Elmhurst, the Titans had 468 yards of total offense (244 via the pass and 224 rushing) to 290 yards for Elmhurst, who had three turnovers on their final three possessions with one of those being a fumble in the end zone recovered for a TD by junior defensive lineman Don Nordstrom.
 
Sophomore quarterback Jack Warner completed nine of 19 passes for all 244 yards and three touchdowns with two of the scores going to senior Artie Checchin, who made three total receptions for 162 yards. Checchin also had a rushing touchdown on a 13-yard reverse with 13:36 to play in the game.

Illinois Wesleyan's top rusher was junior Maurice Shoemaker-Gilmore, who ran 21 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns.
 
Junior linebacker Sean Garvey led the defense with seven total tackles and senior Will james had six solo tackles including a quarterback sack for -6 yards.

What's Next?
After two weeks of road games, Illinois Wesleyan returns to Tucci Stadium to face North Central at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31 ... The No. 21-ranked Cardinals are 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the CCIW after a 17-9 home field loss to No. 5-ranked Wheaton on Saturday ... North Central, who was the conference champion or co-champion in eight seasons from 2006-13, will be seeking to avoid its first four-loss season since 2002 ... IWU is also at home on Nov. 7 against defending league champion Wheaton.
