WHEATON, Ill. - For the first time since the 2008 season, the No. 8-ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's soccer team defeated No. 17-ranked Wheaton with a 1-0 victory at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton on Saturday, Oct. 17.
IWU now sits atop the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin standings at 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCIW, the only CCIW team to not have a conference loss. The host Thunder fell to 11-4 and 3-1 in the CCIW, seeing their five-game win streak come to an end.
The first half saw the Titans put up 11 shots, with senior
Tess Bottorff scoring off a header in what would be the only goal of the game at the 30:22 mark.
Mary Kate Schmidt would be credited with the assist before anchoring the Ill. Wesleyan back line and holding Wheaton to only seven shots total, including only one shot in the second half.
Freshman
Katie Denney pitched a shutout between the pipes for the second time this week and ninth time this season, which is good enough for a tie for fourth most in a single season.
What's Next?IWU returns home to play the first of two home CCIW matches next week starting on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 5 p.m. against Millikin. Titan head coach
David Barrett will be looking for his 200th career win, as his current career win total is 199-72-32 (.710 winning percentage) to go along with a CCIW-only mark of 71-22-9 (.740 percent).
