IWU Clobbers Big Blue on Homecoming, 54-13

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Jack Warner threw for five touchdowns and junior Maurice Shoemaker-Gilmore ran for two scores as the Illinois Wesleyan Titans breezed to a 54-13 win over Millikin on IWU's Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Tucci Stadium.

The No. 20-ranked Titans improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and the Big Blue is 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the league.

Illinois Wesleyan rolled up 496 yards of total offense to 139 for Millikin and the Titans had 28 first downs to six for Millikin. The Titans had six first downs via penalty as Millikin was tagged for 15 penalties worth 157 yards while Illinois Wesleyan was flagged 11 times for 109 yards.

Warner was 22 of 26 for 283 yards with the five TDs coming to junior Quincy Butler, senior Artie Checchin, junior Adam Muellers, junior Dominic Comfort and junior Austin Wagner. The 22 of 26 is an .846 percentage, second best in an IWU game behind the .871 when Lon Erickson was 27 of 31 against Millikin on Oct. 12, 1996.

Checchin made six catches for 89 yards and Comfort gathered in three balls for 77 yards, including his 34-yard TD.

Junior Reese Sobol led the IWU running game with 74 yards on 14 carries and Shoemaker-Gilmore ran for 55 yards on 10 carries with the two TDs.

Sophomore safety Brinton Wilkey and junior linebacker Luke Roth led the Titans with six tackles each while senior lineman William Hargrove and junior linebacker Sean Garvey each had four total stops.
Junior Tyler Fahey and sophomore Erich Lieser each had interceptions and Lieser had a 13-yard return on his pick.

Three of Millikin's points came on a 50-yard field goal by Chayce Volpert, believed to be the longest field goal in a game at Tucci Stadium.

What's Next?
IWU travels to Rock Island to meet Augustana in a CCIW contest next Saturday, Oct. 17 in a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Vikings (2-3 overall, 1-1 CCIW) were 31-14 losers at No. 7-ranked Wheaton (5-0, 2-0 CCIW) on Saturday ... Augustana quarterback Sam Frasco came into the game as the national Division III leader in total offense and amassed 337 yards against the Thunder (23 of 41 passing for 206 yards and two TDs and 131 rushing yards on 14 carries) ... It is the Augustana Homecoming game and it will be the third straight week for Illinois Wesleyan to play in a Homecoming contest - Oct. 3 was Carthage's and Oct. 10 was IWU's.
