Late Surge Keeps IWU Women Ahead of Augie

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team saw a 20-point lead slip to six before pulling away for an 84-71 win over Augustana at the Shirk Center on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
 
The Titans won for the second straight time and improved to 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Augustana fell to 7-10 overall and 1-5 in the CCIW.

The Titans continued their mastery over the Vikings, winning for the 20th straight time in the series.

IWU and Augustana were tied six times in the first half and the Titans knocked down a seven-point Augie lead with 3:32 to play (33-26, their largest of the game) to snag a 40-38 lead at intermission. IWU then outscored Augustana 20-2 in the first four minutes of the second half to get a commanding 60-40 advantage.
A stubborn Augustana team closed to within six at 70-64 with 4:41 remaining but IWU made seven of eight free throws down the stretch to ice the win.

The Vikings outrebounded IWU 40-36 and both teams corralled 16 offensive boards. Augustana committed 22 turnovers to 16 for the Titans and both teams scored 28 points in the paint.
