Big Innings Help IWU Softball to Two Wins

DECATUR, Ill. - The No. 18-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team had a four-run inning in game one and a five-run inning in game two to capture wins over Wis.-Platteville and Wis.-Stevens Point at the Big Blue Tournament in Decatur, Ill., on Saturday, March 29.

The Titans improved to 13-2 with wins over the Pioneers, 5-1, and the Pointers, 6-4. Wis.-Platteville dropped to 9-7 overall while Wis.-Stevens Point is now 7-8.

In the first game win, the Titans scored enough to win in the fourth inning. senior Sara Rogers led off with a single and went to second on an error by the leftfielder. With one out, senior leftfielder Victoria Whitaker singled home Rogers before senior designated hitter Allie Riordan clubbed a two-run home run to stake IWU to a 3-0 lead. With two outs, senior catcher Danielle Burge and freshman third baseman Katie Caulfield singled before Burge scored on a third straight single in the inning by senior shortstop Amanda Fazzari.

Sophomore pitcher Jenna Noland improved to 6-1 as she allowed one run on four hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.

In game two and leading 1-0, IWU posted five runs in the third. With one out, Rogers singles and stole second. Junior Hannah Bowen reached on a bunt single and both runners advanced on stolen bases. Whitaker singled to score Rogers and Bowen came home on the play on an error to make the score 3-0. After a goround out by Riordan, senior catcher Sara Daley homered to score Whitaker and give IWU a 5-0 lead. Again IWU strung together three conseuctive singles from freshman Sarah Platt, Caulfield, and a run-scoring hit from Fazzari.

Senior lefthander Molly McCready (6-1) went five innings, striking out eight and allowing three runs on one hit with five walks. Chloe Montgomery picked up her second save of the season as she pitched the final two innings, fanning three and allowing one run on two hits.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan's scheduled doubeheader at DePauw Sunday was postponed to April 27 due to a scheduling conflict. The Titans will open College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play on Thursday, April 3, at North Central in Naperville, Ill. at 3 p.m.
