ORLANDO, Fla. – The Illinois Wesleyan softball team split its games on Thursday, March 13, at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla., topping SUNY Cortland 8-0 after losing to Simpson College 10-8.
Â
In the second game of the day, the Titans shutout No. 4-ranked SUNY Cortland (4-3) with sophomore pitcher
Jenna Noland earning the win on the mound as she allowed four hits with four strikeouts and no walks. She got plenty of offensive support as the Titans put the game out of reach when
Sara Daley smacked a seventh inning grand slam home run.
Â
IWU opened the first inning strong, as
Hannah Bowen tripled down the right field line to score
Sara Rogers. Moments later,
Allie Riordan, who had three hits, grounded out to first base, scoring Bowen to put IWU ahead, 2-0.
Â
In the sixth, senior
Danielle Burge hit a two-run homer to left field to score freshman
Sarah Platt and extend the Titan lead to 4-0.
In the first game of the day, Simpson jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth when IWU out up five runs to get a 6-5 lead. Rogers had a three-run homer to left field, Burge had a double that plated Bowen, and Burge later scored on an error.
Â
But Noland couldn't hold the lead in the seventh as Simpson scored five runs on a three-run home run and two unearned runs. The Titans loaded the bases with no one out in the last of the seventh but managed two runs to lose 10-8.
Â
IWU's Noland, in relief of starter
Molly McCready, was charged with the loss as she allowed three earned runs on four hits in four innings. McCready went three innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits and six walks.
