IWU Softball Gets Pair of Wins Over Thunder

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - On "Seniors' Day", senior Alyssa Vorel scattered four hits in a 5-1 win and junior Molly McCready allowed two hits in a 3-0 win as Illinois Wesleyan swept Wheaton in a doubleheader on Saturday (April 27) at IWU Field.

The No. 18-ranked Titans improved to 28-7 overall and 9-3 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Thunder fell to 17-16 overall and finished 5-9 in the league. With a doubleheader sweep of Millikin on Saturday, Carthage claimed the CCIW title with a 12-2 record and will host the conference tournament next Friday and Saturday.

Game One
♦  Wesleyan scored first, getting two in the first inning when senior Keri Leach singled with two outs and senior Emma Clark hit a home run to centerfield. It is Clark's 10th home run of the season and ties her own single-season record.

♦  IWU added three more in the sixth as Leach led off with an opposite field home run to left field. Clark walked and stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. She came home on a sacrifice fly to rightfield by sophomore Hannah Bowen. Junior Jessica Toth singled off the third baseman's glove and came home when junior Sara Daley doubled to right center.

♦  Vorel improved to 11-2 and struck out two in the win.

Game Two
♦  The Titans scored two in the third and added one more in the sixth.

♦  In the third, senior shortstop Courtney Martin singled through the left side and went to second on a sacrifice by sophomore leftfielder Audra James. Leach doubled down the leftfield line to score Martin. Leach stole third and came home on a double by Bowen.

♦  The second game double was Leach's 15th of the season, tying her for the season record with Sara Powers (1999) and Jamie Palmer (2004).

♦  Toth doubled to lead off the sixth and went to third on a sacrifice by junior Kaity Crane and scored on a ground out by junior Erin Sweeney.

♦  McCready (12-3) struck out five and walked one in getting her win. She induced 10 groundouts.

What's Next?
The Titans play a doubleheader at Millikin on Tuesday (April 30) at 3:30 p.m. as a make-up of the rained out games scheduled for last Tuesday.
