IWU Softball Loses Pair of Games at Fontbonne

ST. ANN, Mo. - The No. 20-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team lost a pair of games by scores of 8-5 and 7-3 in a non-conference doubleheader against Fontbonne at ABC Ballpark in St. Ann, Mo., on Friday (April 12).

The Titans slip to 16-7 while the Griffins improved to 17-9.

Game One
♦ IWU scored single runs in the first and fourth and got three in the fifth. The Griffins scored four in the third with three coming on a Jessie Pratt homer and added two in the fourth on a two-run HR by Sarah Cerutti. Fontbonne tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth.

♦ Senior shortstop Courtney Martin had three singles for IWU and senior centerfielder Keri Leach also had one of Wesleyan's nine hits as IWU left 11 on base. Senior Emma Clark and junior Sara Daley provided RBI.

♦ Junior lefthander Molly McCready (7-3) was the losing pitcher while Rachel McCarthy (8-4) was the winner.

Game Two
♦ Fontbonne took an early 1-0 lead but IWU responded with doubles by junior second baseman Sara Rogers and Leach, who had three hits in the contest, to tie the game at 1-1 in the third.

♦ With the Griffins ahead 5-1, the Titans made it 5-3 in the top of the sixth on a two-run pinch-hit triple by Rogers but Fontbonne tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-3 lead.

♦ Wesleyan senior Alyssa Vorel (5-2) was the losing pitcher as Fontbonne freshman Madison Leonard struck out eight and evened her record at 5-5.

What's Next?
Illinois Wesleyan hosts its annual softball tournament this weekend (go here for complete schedule). IWU battles Washington U. (20-8) at 12 p.m. and Anderson (14-8) at 4 p.m. on Saturday and comes back with games against Anderson at 10 a.m. and Blackburn at 2 p.m. on Sunday. All games will be at IWU Field.
