ORLANDO, Fla. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team got a perfect game from
Chloe Montgomery in an 8-0 win over Wheaton (Mass.) after posting a 2-0 win over Bridgewater (Va.) in the first game at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla., on Thursday (March 14).
With the wins, IWU, ranked No. 4 in Division III in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll, improved to 8-1.
WHEATON (MASS.) GAME
♦ Sophomore
Chloe Montgomery (2-0) faced the minimum 15 batters and struck out nine in the five-inning win. She turns in the second no-htter in two days for IWU, following
Jenna Noland against Marietta on Wednesday.
♦ The Titans scored one run in the first and four in the fourth before a four-run inning broke the game open.
♦ Junior second baseman
Erin Sweeney powered two home runs and had three runs batted in, including the walk-off game-ending two run shot.
♦ Senior third baseman
Emma Clark also hit a three-run homer, her second of the season and the 22nd in her carerr, breaking the IWU school career record of 21 held by Valerie Hackett (2007-10).
BRIDGEWATER GAME
♦ Junior
Molly McCready improved to 3-0 this spring as she limited the Eagles (6-5) to three hits and struck out 12 while walking none.
♦ The Titans made the most of their six hits in the game and scored in the top of the second when junior rightfielder
Allie Riordan led off with an infield single. Senior
Stephanie Polich pinch-ran for Riordan and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman
Hannah Bowen. Clark knocked a single up the middle to drive home Polich.
♦ IWU tacked on an unearned run in the fifth with two outs when Bowen tripled to centerfield and came home when pinch hitter Sweeney reached on a fielding error on the shortstop.
♦ In addition to Bowen, junior designated player
Danielle Burge also had a pair of hits for IWU.
