IWU Women Lose Narrowly to Wheaton in CCIW Semis

KENOSHA, Wis. – In a tight second-half battle, the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team narrowly fell to No. 2 Wheaton, 62-59, at Carthage's Tarble Arena Friday evening.
 
The defending CCIW tournament and Division III national champion Titans still have a shot to continue their season if they receive an NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament bid.
 
Wheaton will face the winner of the Carthage vs. North Central game tomorrow in the tournament championship match scheduled for 7 p.m. The league champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
 
♦ The Thunder jumped to an early lead on the Titans in the first half, only allowing IWU to lead at the 18:06 marker by two points.

♦ Wheaton then stole control and slowly extended its lead, jumping ahead by as many as 11 points, 28-17, with 42 seconds left on the clock after Brooke Olson completed a free throw.

♦ Right at the buzzer, Colleen McMahon made a layup to bring the score to 28-19, Wheaton advantage, at the end of the first half.

♦ Wheaton continued offensive success in the second half, but IWU slowly began hacking away at the Thunders' lead. With 11:56 on the clock, the Titans tied up the game when Lexi Baltes made a layup to bring the score at 41-41.

♦ The Titans and Thunder remained neck-and-neck until Brooke Olson hit a three pointer to put her team up, 61-59, with 35 seconds on the clock.

♦ As a final second attempt, Katy Seibring put up a three pointer, just missing the shot, leading to the Titans' semifinal loss.

♦ IWU finished the game 32.1 percent from the field, 21.1 percent from three-point land, and 80.8 percent from the charity stripe.
