BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team was able to go 4-0 against Carthage last season, but in the first meeting of 2013, the Titans were not able to hold on to the undefeated College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Lady Reds, falling, 62-48, at the Shirk Center Saturday (Jan. 12) night.
The Titans now have a 9-6 record and are 2-2 in the CCIW. Carthage extends its win-streak to four, sporting a 12-3 record, 4-0 in the conference.
♦ Although IWU scored the first point of the game, Carthage offensively controlled the first half, only allowing the Titans to come within a couple points. The Lady Reds shot 52.2 percent from the field in the first half and went 40 percent from three-point land.
♦ Despite making 2-of-4 free throws after the buzzer, from technical and personal fouls, the Titans trailed Carthage, 31-27, heading into halftime.
♦ The Lady Reds widened the gap against IWU in the first couple minutes of the second half, going on a 9-2 run to sit atop 42-29 at the 16:15 marker.
♦ The Titans were not able to break Carthage's double-figure lead until there was 7:22 on the clock when
Michelle Bilek hit a three pointer to bring the score to 45-54.
♦ However, the Lady Reds were able to hold on for the 14-point victory over IWU.
♦ The Titans finished the game 25.4 percent from the field, 8.3 percent from behind the arc, and 75 percent from the charity stripe.
♦ IWU's 48 points is a season low.
