IWU Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The No. 24-ranked Illinois Wesleyan softball team has won seven straight and improved to 18-3 with wins of 8-2 and 8-4 in a doubleheader at No. 10 DePauw on Saturday (April 7).

The Tigers slipped to 18-6.

In game one, the Titans trailed 1-0 before putting up a six spot in the top of the third.

Junior Stephanie Polich walked and went to second on a sacrifice by junior shortstop Courtney Martin. Freshman Audra James reached on a bunt single and junior centerfielder Keri Leach homered to centerfield to bring home three runs. Junior third baseman Emma Clark walked and sophomore designated hitter Allie Riordan doubled to right center. Sophomore catcher Sara Daley brought in Clark with a sacrifice fly and sophomore second baseman Jessica Toth singled home Riordan. A double to left center by freshman first baseman Chloe Montgomery scored Toth.

Riordan and Toth each had three of the Titans' 12 hits.

Sophomore Molly McCready (7-2) was the winning pitcher as she struck out six, walked three and gave up six hits, two of those solo home runs by Amy Hallett and Haley Buchanan.

Illinois Wesleyan got 11 hits in game two and had another big inning in the second game to open up a lead, scoring four in the third.
Martin led off with a walk and stole second and third, scoring on a ground out by James. With the bases empty, Leach and Clark singled and Riordan reached on a fielding error to load the bases. Toth then doubled to left center to score Clark and Leach. Junior pitcher Alyssa Vorel singled to bring home Riordan.

Vorel (6-1) was the winning pitcher with a complete game, scattering eight hits and walking none while striking out three.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action on Monday with a home doubleheader against Millikin. The newly-scheduled time for the first game is 3:30 p.m.
