Titan Softball Splits CCIW Games at Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. - The No. 7-ranked  Illinois Wesleyan softball team split a pair of conference games at Elmhurst on Sunday (April 29), dropping a 6-5 decision in game one before winning by a 5-3 count in the nightcap.

The Titans are 31-6 overall and 9-3 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Elmhurst is 25-14 and finished 7-7 in the league.
The Titans will play at Wheaton at 9 a.m. Monday (April 30) as a makeup for the rainout Saturday.
In order to host the CCIW tournament, IWU needs to sweep Wheaton Monday and get help from Millikin in beating Augustana one game of their doubleheader Monday.

GAME ONE
In game one, trailing 5-0, Elmhurst scored six runs on four hits in the last of the sixth to earn the come-from-behind win and hand IWU its second straight loss for only the second time this year.

Sophomore Molly McCready (13-3) took the loss in the circle, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

IWU scored in the fourth as junior centerfielder Keri Leach homered to centerfield and added two in the fifth as junior Katie Bruins led off with an infield single, advanced to second on a sacrifice and to third on a single by freshman Audra James. Bruins came home on a bunt single by Leach and James came home on an RBI singled through the right side by junior third baseman Emma Clark.

The Titans tacked on two more in the sixth as sophomore pinch-hitter Victoria Whitaker reached on a shortstop throwing error and scored on a home run by junior shortstop Courtney Martin.

GAME TWO
Junior Alyssa Vorel improved to 10-2 with the pitching win in game two as she threw a seven inning four-hitter and struck out five. All three Bluejay runs were unearned.

IWU got a 1-0 lead in the first as Martin singled, went to second on a Leach single and scored on a Clark single. The Titans added a run in the second as sophomore Sara Daley singled and went to second on an error and to third on a wild pitch and scored when Martin doubled to left center.

The Titans grabbed a 4-1 lead in the third. Sophomore DH Allie Riordan singled through the right side of the infield and was pinch-run for by freshman Amanda Fazzari, who advanced to second on a single by sophomore first baseman Jessica Toth. Vorel grounded out to get the runners to second and third before Daley singled to right to score both.

Illinois Wesleyan added an insurance run in the fifth when Toth led off with a double to left center, went to third on a Vorel sacrifice and scored on a sacrifice fly by Daley.
