IWU Softball 27-4 After Pair of Wins Over Illinois College

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team improved to 27-4 with a pair of wins over Illinois College on Tuesday (April 17) at IWU Field. The Titans took game one, 9-1, and won the nightcap, 5-1.

In game one the Titans scored four in the second and four more in the fourth. With one out in the second, freshman Chloe Montgomery walked and sophomore second baseman Erin Sweeney singled up the middle. Junior Stephanie Polich reached on a throwing error by the pitcher that enabled both Sweeney and Montgomery to score. A triple by junior centerfielder Keri Leach brought in Polich and junior third baseman Emma Clark singled to bring in Leach.

In the third, sophomore Kaity Crane singled and scored on a double by Toth. Montgomery singled and Sweeney reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to score Toth. After Polich walked, junior Katie Bruins had a pinch hit double to right center to bring in two more runs.

Toth (3-0) was the winning pitcher, going four innings and allowing one run on two hits while striking out five.

Bruins got the Titans on top in game two with a two-run homer in the second inning. She was also the winning pitcher, pitching five innings and striking out five while allowing one run on three hits.

Sophomore rightfielder Victoria Whitaker had a pair of the Titans' eight total hits in the game.

Illinois Wesleyan will next host North Park in a 1 p.m. College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader on Sunday (April 22).
