BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Sophomore
Molly McCready struck out a school-record 17 hitters as the Illinois Wesleyan softball team downed Monmouth in game one of a doubleheader at IWU Field on Wednesday (March 28). The Scots plated a run in the eighth to get a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
The Titans are now 11-2 this spring while Monmouth is 8-6.
In game one, McCready allowed only a seventh inning single to Caitlin Lingle and walked four in her one-hitter.
IWU gave her four runs of support in the fourth inning as freshman pinch-hitter

Mackenzie Astling and junior shortstop
Courtney Martin doubled home two runs before scoring herself on an error by the pitcher.
The Titans tacked on two unearned runs in the fifth. Junior centerfielder
Keri Leach had two hits in the game for IWU.
The Titans, who got only six hits in the nightcap, fell behind 2-0 in the first inning of game two before tying the issue at 2-2 in the third.
Trailing 3-2 in the last of the seventh, IWU tied the game when
Alyssa Vorel doubled to deep rightfield and, with two outs, sophomore
Jessica Toth delivered a game-tying pinch-hit double to leftfield.
McCready (4-1) was the losing hurler in game two, pitching just one inning and allowing one hit, as Monmouth got across a run in the top of the eighth. Vorel allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out four as the starter.
Illinois Wesleyan is at home on Sunday (April 1) at 1 p.m. against the University of Chicago (10-4 prior to games coming up Saturday).
