Titan Women Outright CCIW Champs After Win at Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. – The No. 20-ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team won its fifth straight College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title outright with a 75-63 win at Millikin on Wednesday (Feb. 15).

Winning its fifth straight game, Illinois Wesleyan improved to 12-1 in CCIW play and 19-5 overall as Millikin slipped to 7-6 in the conference and 15-9 overall.

The Titans trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half but scored the final five points in the first period to close to within seven at 25-28 at the break.

Trailing 41-34 with 15:57 to play in the game, the Titans went on a 12-0 run to grab a 46-41 lead, capped by a Lexi Baltes 3-pointer with 12:10 to go. The Big Blue got no closer than 1 point the rest of the way as the Titans shot .533 in the second period from the field (16 of 30).

Senior Olivia Lett scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and became the IWU season scoring record-holder (see “Notes” below). Senior Brittany Hasselbring contributed 17 points and junior Michelle Bilek added 11.

The Titans shot .446 percent from the field (25 of 56) and connected on 10 of 26 3-point field goal tries (.385). IWU made 15 of their 18 free throw attempts (.833).

Millikin shot .350 (21 of 60) from the field and made 5 of 22 3-point efforts (.227) while making 16 of 23 free throws (.696). The Titans outrebounded the Big Blue 37-35 as Millikin collected 14 offensive boards.

Crystal Ziegler led the Big Blue with 15 points while Cecily Aldridge got 12 and Julia Robert scored 10.

The Titans close out their regular season with a 5 p.m. game against Elmhurst on Saturday (Feb. 18). In addition to being "Seniors' Night", it is also "Green Out" night - fans are encouraged to wear green to support the team and encourage campus-wide environmental sustainability.

NOTES: Illinois Wesleyan will host the CCIW postseason tournament for the fifth year in a row with semifinal games on Friday (Feb. 24) and the title game on Saturday night…IWU will play in the second semifinal game on Friday against an opponent yet to be determined…The Titans have won 16 of 17 since December 11… Lett is the new IWU season scoring leader with 516 points, breaking the mark of 490 set by Katie Cantrell in 29 games in the 2002-03 season…Lett also became the single season record holder with 124 free throws this year, topping the season record of 121 by Christina Solari in 31 games in 2008-09.
