BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The No. 17-ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team came from an 11-point first half deficit to top No. 14-ranked Wis.-Whitewater 72-69 at the Shirk Center on Tuesday (Nov. 27).
Senior
Melissa Gardner led the Titans (who improved to 3-2) with 19 points while juniors
Lexi Baltes and
Colleen McMahon contributed 18 and 17, respectively.
The Warhawks (also 3-2) topped the Titans 35-30 heading into halftime, and they continued to build off of momentum into the second half, opening with a 5-0 run over IWU to boost their lead to 10 at 40-30 with 17:40 on the clock.
The Titans, however, started hacking at the defecit, tying the game at the 11:12 marker, 47-47, after junior
Katy Seibring hit a pair of free throws. Although the Warhawks stole back control, IWU did not let them get too far, as the Titans rallied for a comeback with under two minutes remaining.
Baltes nailed a pair of free throws to give Illinois Wesleyan its first lead of the half, 64-63, and the team sparked from there, holding its minor lead until the buzzer sounded.
The Titans will return to action Saturday (Dec. 1) when they host the University of Chicago at 2 p.m. IWU will also unveil the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship banner prior to tipoff.
