NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - In the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team's second game of the Manchester College Tip-Off, the Titans not only defeated Muskingum, 80-67, at Stauffer-Wolfe Arean, but also acquired its first win of the season.
Five Titans reached double-digits on offense, with junior
Colleen McMahon contributing 16 points. Junior
Lexi Baltes (15), junior
Shelby Jackson (12), junior
Katy Seibring (12), and senior
Michelle Bilek (10) also added to IWU's 13-point victory.
McMahon and Jackson were named to the all-tournament team, along with Muskingum's Hannah Nelson and Karen Sidwell, Erynn Meiklejohn of Manchester, and Mount Union's MaryBeth Leitch and Rosa LaMattina, who was named as the tournament's "Most Valuable Player."
Against Muskingum, Baltes tallied eight assists and six steals. Jackson and Baltes each led IWU with six rebounds.
Although the Muskies (1-1) opened with an early lead, the Titans (1-1) were able to jump ahead and hold their lead Muskingum knocked down a three pointer to tie the game, 15-15, with 13:25 on the clock.
The Muskies went on a 17-2 run to jump ahead of IWU, 34-17, with 7:27 on the clock for their largest lead of the first half. Muskingum held onto their double digit lead heading into halftime, 48-38.
The Titans, however, worked at cutting the Muskies' lead and was able to tie the game, 48-48, with 15:48 on the clock.
It was a back-and-forth battle until IWU capitalized on a run late in the five-minute marker when it rallied to a 13-point lead to conclude the game, 80-67.
The Titans will resume action at their own Frontier Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday (Nov. 24), when Illinois Wesleyan hosts Coe at 3 p.m. IWU was No. 5 and Coe was No. 22 in the preseason D3hoops.com poll.
The opening game of the tourney on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. will feature DePauw against Washington U., who were ranked No. 4 and No. 9 respectively in the preseason D3hoops.com poll.
