ELMHURST, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team secured solo first place in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with a convincing 75-56 win at Elmhurst College on Saturday (Jan. 21).
The Titans and Bluejays had been tied for the league lead heading into the game - IWU stands now at 6-0 in CCIW play and 13-4 overall with its 10th straight win while the Bluejays are 5-1 in the league and 14-3 overall.
With 10 players scoring, senior
Olivia Lett was the sole Titan in double figures with 22 points. She also corralled seven rebounds, tied with senior
Brittany Hasselbring for the team lead. Hasselbring also handed out four assists and scored eight points.
The Titans held a dominating 47-33 rebound advantage. Fiona McMahon and Meghan Merklein each had eight boards and McMahon led her team with 17 points. Megan Ney scored 10 for Elmhurst.
IWU got off to a terrific start and led by 22 at 45-23 at intermission, shooting .500 (17 of 34) from the fleld. The Titans finished at .409 (27 of 56) from the floor and made just 3 of 18 from 3-point territory. But IWU was deadly from the free throw stripe, going 18 of 21 (.857).
The Bluejays were only 7 of 21 from the field in the first 20 minutes and shot .353 (18 of 51) in the game, making only 1 of 11 3-pointers. The Jays were guilty of 22 turnovers compared to 20 for Illinois Wesleyan.
Illinois Wesleyan hosts Millikin in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Shirk Center on Wednesday (Jan. 25). The Big Blue is 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW after a 70-60 home win over North Central on Saturday.
