Late Goals Put Chicago Past IWU in Soccer, 3-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan men's soccer team let a lead get away late with goals against coming in the final 16 minutes in a 3-2 loss to the University of Chicago on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Neis Field.

The loss sends the IWU record to 3-3-0 while the Maroons improved to 3-1-1.

The Titans struck first with the only goal of the first half at the 10:08 mark on a tally by junior Tim Griffin, his second of the year, on assists from Frank Marchiori and sophomore Declan Geraghty.

Chicago tied the game at 61:33 on Alan Pikna's third goal of the year with an assist to Nic Lopez, but the Titans took the lead almost five minutes later, at 66:13 when junior Kyle Gorgol scored on a penalty kick for his second goal of the year.

The Maroons did the rest of the scoring with the game-tying score coming at 74:44 when Michael Choquette let a blast fly from 30 yards out that went over the head of Titan keeper Tim Hegwood.

At 78:51 the Maroons scored the game-winner on a shot into the net by Matt Vecchitto with assists to Stanton Coville and Nick Codispoti.

Chicago outshot IWU 13-8 and Hegwood made three saves for IWU. Chicago keeper Elek Lane also had three saves as the Titans had five shots on goal.

Illinois Wesleyan's next action is on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 at Beloit College.
