BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Junior
Kayla Mahoney drove in three runs and three other Titans hit home runs to power Illinois Wesleyan to an 11-9 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Elmhurst on Sunday, April 3 at IWU Field. The Titans had 14 hits to win game two, 14-3.
With the two victories, Illinois Wesleyan improved to 12-4 overall and 3-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while the Bluejays fell to 7-13 overall and 1-3 in the league.
The Titans trailed 9-5 going into the last of the fifth before scoring five runs. Sophomore shortstop
Emma Clark led off with a single and went to second on a single by
Kaity Crane. With one out, senior first baseman
Kris Lee walked to load the bases. After a fly out to rightfield, Mahoney drove a double to centerfield to score all three runners and sophomore
Katie Bruins followed that with a home run to centerfield.
In relief, freshman
Victoria Whitaker was the winning pitcher, going 2 1/3 innings and allowing only one hit while striking out two.
In the second game, IWU scored six in the second inning and five more runs in the third en route to the 10-run rule shortened game. Sophomore centerfielder
Stephanie Polich had three hits, including a double, and scored three runs while Lee banged out a home run, had two other hits and collected five runs batted in.
Freshman
Sara Daley, Crane and Whitaker each had two hits and Daley scored three times while Crane knocked in three runs.
Whitaker (4-2) was the winning pitcher, going three innings and allowing four hits while striking out two.
