Titan Gridders Survive 28-25 Win at Millikin

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan football team improved to 7-1 with a 28-25 win over a stubborn Millikin squad in Decatur on Saturday (Oct. 29).

The Titans scored with 10:44 to play in the first quarter when Sean Conley carried the ball in from five yards out to cap a five-play, 73-yard drive. Freshman Tony Angelos's extra point kick was blocked and returned by Millikin's Darrell Mitchell for a defensive extra point to leave the IWU lead at 6-2.

Senior Erich Bushong got the Titans on the board again just two minutes later when he returned a punt 63 yards for a score with 8:29 to go in the first. Conley caught a two-point pass from Alex Hale on the conversion to give IWU a 14-2 advantage.

A 29-yard field goal from Millikin's Austin Brettschneider with no time left in the half left IWU on top 14-5 at intermission.

Conley got his second TD run from three yards with 7:19 to go in the third, ending a 14 play, 80-yard drive that chewed up 7:30 on the clock. Angelos added the extra point kick to give IWU a 21-5 lead.

Millikin then scored quickly with a drive of three plays and 51 yards that lasted only 1:13. Sean Dunning ran in from six yards out and got Millikin back to within 10 at 21-11.

Dunning scored again on a 2-yard run with 13:26 to play in the game, ending a 10-play, 66 yard drive. Brettschneider's kick left Illinois Wesleyan with a 21-18 lead.

After a kickoff return to the IWU 38, sophomore quarterback Rob Gallik found Joey Driver on first down for a 62-yard touchdown completion. Angelos made the extra point kick and the Titans led 28-18 with 13:09 to play.

Millikin scored for the last time with 8:05 left when quarterback Matt Holmes ran in from two yards out and Brettschneider made the kick to provide the final scoring at 28-25.

Millikin outgained the Titans 438 to 285 in total offense. Gallik was 14-of-22 with one TD and an interception with 235 passing yards for Illinois Wesleyan.

Holmes led the Millikin offense with 111 yards rushing on 26 attempts and 14-30-1 passing for 257 yards and two TDs.
         
Ben Houk led the Titan defense with 11 tackles.

Joshua Pollard had eight tackles and a sack for the Big Blue while Jacob Alvis also had eight tackles. Daniel Fishel has an interception for the Big Blue.
