Titan Women Open CCIW Season with Win vs. Cardinals

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The No. 11-ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team got off to a 23-8 lead in the game's first seven minutes and eased to a 88-67 win over visiting North Central in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener for both teams at the Shirk Center on Tuesday, January 4.

Junior Olivia Lett led five Titans in double figures with 19 while sophomore Melissa Gardner scored 15, senior Nikki Preston scored 13, senior Stacey Arlis had 11 and senior Sarah Cotner added 10.

The Titans improved to 9-3 overall while the Cardinals are now 4-8.

Illinois Wesleyan held a dominating rebound edge of 44-29, led by nine from Arlis, and the Cardinals and Titans each committed 21 turnovers.

IWU, who led by a 48-36 margin at halftime, shot at a .486 percentage from the field (35 of 72) and connected on 11 of 30 3-point free tries (.367). North Central shot .436 percent (24 of 55) and made two of 10 (.200) from beyond the 3-point arc.

North Central got 14 points off the bench from Sophie Newsom and 12 from Jackie Errico.

Illinois Wesleyan will play next at Carthage in Kenosha, Wis., at 5 p.m.
