No. 6 IWU Women Lose at Home to Carthage, 63-55

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Despite forcing 31 turnovers, the Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team lost a 63-55 conference home game to Carthage on Saturday, Jan. 29.

The No. 6-rated Titans fell to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Carthage improved to 14-5 this season and 5-3 in the league.

The loss snapped a 10-game win streak this year and put an end to IWU's 13-game CCIW winning streak. It was the Titans' first CCIW loss at the Shirk Center in 23 games, dating back to Jan. 12, 2008 when Millikin beat IWU, 68-63.

The Titans fell into a hole early and trailed 25-3 with 7:54 to play in the first half but kept Carthage from scoring until Kristi Schmidt hit a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left to give the Lady Reds a 28-14 lead at the half.

IWU battled back to tie the game at 37-37 with 10:49 to go before the Lady Reds outscored the Titans, 15-4, to take a lead of 11 at 52-41 with 4:59 remaining. IWU got no closer than six (52-46) the remainder of the game.

Junior Olivia Lett led IWU with 16 points and senior Nikki Preston scored 13. They both had six rebounds along with senior Hope Schulte to lead IWU, who was outrebounded by a 42-34 margin.

Carthage got 19 points from Heather Gilmore and 10 points out of Diana Jacklin, who collected a game-high 12 rebounds.

Illinois Wesleyan made only 19 of 63 from the field (.302) and connected on five of 23 3-point free tries (.217) while making 12 of 19 free throws (.632). IWU was guilty of 21 turnovers.

The Lady Reds shot .524 (22 of 42) from the field and made nine of 14 (.643) from beyond the 3-point arc. Carthage made 10 of 19 free throws (.526).
