IWU Softball Wins Regional Opener, 3-2 Over Fontbonne

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team improved to 31-14 with a first round 3-2 win over Fontbonne in the NCAA Division III regional at Indianola, Iowa on Thursday, May 13. The Titans will meet St. Thomas at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 14, in a winners' bracket game.

The Titans and Griffins were tied 1-1 when IWU scored two runs in the fifth. Freshman Alyssa Vorel led off the inning with a double to left center. Sophomore third baseman Kayla Mahoney reached on a fielder's choice and Jen Monaco flied out to left for the second out of the inning. Junior first baseman Kris Lee broke the tie with a doubled to left field to bring home Mahoney. Freshman Jaci Forsythe drew a walk on a full count and freshman Annie Lenz hit a pinch-hit single to score Lee.

Senior Christy Engel improved to 12-9 as she scattered five hits and walked two while striking out eight.

IWU's next opponent, St. Thomas, improved to 38-6 with a 4-1 win over the host school Simpson.

Fontbonne (24-16) will play Simpson at 2 p.m. in an elimination game.
