Titans Beat Hope, 7-3, Before 1-0 Loss to Fontbonne

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team got three hits, including a homer and two doubles, and five runs batted in from leftfielder Jen Monaco in a 7-3 win over Hope at IWU Field on April 9. The Titans lost game two, 1-0, to Fontbonne and stand at 13-7 overall.

Monaco doubled in both the second and fourth innings and hit a towering three-run homer to left in the fifth. Freshman centerfielder Stephanie Polich had two hits and sophomore third baseman Kayla Mahoney also had two hits and scored twice.

Freshman Alyssa Vorel started the game and allowed eight hits and three runs in three innings and junior Lauren James picked up the win, pitching the final four innings and striking out 11 of the 13 batters she faced while allowing only one hit.

The Titans lost a 1-0 decision to Fontbonne in the second game when Amanda Beaver opened the bottom of the seventh with a double over the head of Monaco and came home to score when Amy Simon reached on a throwing error by Mahoney.

Senior Christy Engel allowed just four hits and struck out seven while her opposing number, Anastasia Hibbeler, scattered seven hits and struck out only one.

Kris Lee had a double for the Titans and Engel had two singles.

Illinois Wesleyan plays Fontbonne again on Saturday, April 10, at 2 p.m. followed by a game against No. 15-ranked Washington U. at 4 p.m.
