BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team claimed a pair of shutout wins over North Park on Saturday, April 24, and senior
Christy Engel was the winning hurler in both games to improve to 8-6 this season and become IWU's all-time leader in pitching victories.
The Titans won 7-0 and 2-0 and moved to 23-11 overall and finished 9-5 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. North Park fell to 15-17 overall and 3-11 in the league.
Engel allowed one hit in four innings of game one, striking out seven, and one hit in six innings in game two, striking out five. She now has 56 victories, eclipsing the old mark of 55 set by Kelly Murray from 2001 to 2004. Engel is already IWU's all-time pitching leader in strikeouts and shutouts.
In game one, the Titans scored all seven runs in the third inning. Leading off,
Lisa Narotsky singled to third base and
Stephanie Polich reached on an error. Engel singled on a bunt to load the bases.
Allison Ward reached on an error to bring home Narotsky.
Kayla Mahoney walked to bring home Polich and Engel scored on a single by
Alyssa Vorel.
Jen Monaco's sacrifice fly to right brought home Ward to make it 4-0.
Junior
Kris Lee then hit a three-run home run to make the score 7-0.
In the second game, IWU scored single runs in the third and fifth. In the third, Engel singled to left field and went to second when Ward singled through the left side. Both advanced on a sacrifice by Mahoney and Engel scored on a ground out to
Alyssa Vorel.
In the fifth, Mahoney singled and was pinch run for by
Rachel Soltwedel, who went to second on a ground out and scored when Lee reached on an error by the third baseman.
