BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team was sent into overtime by a tenacious Chicago squad and came out 76-75 winners at the Shirk Center on Saturday, Dec. 4.
The Titans improved to 3-2 while the Maroons fell to 4-3 in the loss.
IWU led by as many as 11 in the first half (24-13 with 8:27 to play) and held a 35-29 lead at halftime. The game featured four lead changes and seven ties, including a 68-68 deadlock at the end of regulation after Chicago's Taylor Simpson scored with four seconds left to force the extra period.
Junior
Brittany Hasselbring scored a career-high 14 points in the win, all coming in the first half, while sophomore
Melissa Gardner scored 12, all coming on 3-pointers. Junior
Olivia Lett added 11 points, grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and handed out a game-high six assists, and
Stacey Arlis also contributed 10 points in the victory.
Senior
Hope Schulte scored five of the Titans' eight points in the overtime and senior
Nikki Preston scored the other three on a layup and a free throw.
Chicago got 23 points from Morgan Herrick and two players finished with "double-doubles" - Simpson with 17 points and 12 rebounds and Meghan Herrick with 17 points and 10 boards.
The Maroons outrebounded IWU by a 48-35 margin with 15 coming on the offensive end. IWU committed 22 turnovers and forced Chicago into 33.
The Titans were 30 of 73 from the field (.411) and seven of 22 from 3-point range (.318) while connecting on 9 of 12 free throws (.750).
The Maroons were 25 of 55 from the field (.455) and four of 16 from 3-point range (.250) while making 21 of 30 free throw tries (.700).
