ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - A week after winning a game on a late score, the Illinois Wesleyan football team lost on a score with 30 seconds to play in the game, falling 20-17 at Augustana on Saturday, Nov. 13.
The Titans' season ends with a 7-3 record and 4-3, tied for third, in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The Vikings won their first home game of the season and finished with a 6-4 mark and also were 4-3 in the league.
The Titans trailed, 7-0, at halftime as the only score of the first half came with 7:57 to go on a 2-yard run by David Lee and an extra point kick by Arni Fitzwater. That TD capped a 14 play, 80-yard drive.
In the third quarter with 13:26 to play, senior quarterback
Brien Rooney connected with junior
Joey Driver for a 71 yard touchdown, ending a three-play drive. Freshman #Tim Hollowed# added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.
With 2:21 to go in the third quarter, the Titans put together a 12 play, 59-yard drive and senior
Bo Lanter ran the ball to the end zone from 9 yards out. Hollowed's kick gave IWU a 14-7 edge.
Lee tied up with Zac McCullough on a 56-yard pass play for a Viking score with 12:15 to go in the game and Fitzwater's kick tied the score at 14-14.
Illinois Wesleyan got outstanding field position after a 49-yard kickoff return from freshman #T.J. Stinde# and a facemask penalty, then put together an eight play, 15 yard drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal by Hollowed with 7:45 remaining in the game that provided IWU with a 17-14 lead.
After drives where each team was forced to punt, Augustana got the ball back with 2:49 to play in the contest and drove the ball 40 yards on six plays with Lee scoring his second TD of the game on a 1-yard run with 30 seconds left to give Augustana a 20-17 lead. Fitzwater's extra point kick was blocked.
After a 25-yard kickoff return from Lanter, IWU got 42 yards on two pass completions to the Augustana 25 before a final incomplete pass ended the game.
Lanter led the IWU rushing attack with 69 yards on seven carries while Rooney had 47 yards on 17 carries and
Eli Williams had 14 yards on seven carries. Rooney completed 17 of 29 for 225 yards.
Dayton Burnett had six catches for 49 yards,
Brett Robinson made four catches for 39 yards and Driver made three grabs for a total of 93 yards.
Robert Wood had a career-high 181 rushing yards for Augustana, who had 223 rushing yards and Lee was 11 for 19 to account for 129 passing yards.

Dan Rogers made 12 total tackles, including 10 solo, to lead IWU defensively. Senior
Max Brooks had five solo and assisted on five more for 10 total stops and junior linebacker
Ryan Gresko and junior defensive back
Erich Bushong each had seven tackles. Gresko had a quarterback sack for -9 yards and
Ben Houk had a sack for -11 yards and junior #P.J. Cummings# had an interception return for 17 yards.
