BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan football Titans blasted North Park's defense for 548 yards in a 42-0 win on IWU's Homecoming game on Saturday, Oct. 9.
The Titans, who improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, scored with 8:15 to play in the first quarter on a two-yard run by senior
Eli Williams and freshman kicker
Tim Hollowed made the first of his six extra point kicks in the contest to make it 7-0.
With 2:38 left in the first, senior quarterback
Brien Rooney connected with
Brett Robinson on an 83-yard TD pass to put the Titans ahead 14-0.
IWU increased their advantage with two touchdowns late in the first half - with 1:58 to go until halftime, Rooney got
Bo Lanter on a 51-yard pass play for a score and then with just 15 seconds to go before intermission, Rooney threw for his third TD pass, this one a 5-yard connection to
Joey Driver.
With 11:55 to play in the third quarter, Lanter broke loose for a 40-yard touchdown run to make it 35-0 and the final IWU score of the day came when Rooney scampered in on a keeper from 10 yards out with 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Ryan Gresko led the Titans defensively with nine total tackles and
Ben Houk had seven with a quarterback sack.
Chris Rice (-9 yards) and
Joe Schneider (-9 yards) also had quarterback sacks for the Titan defense that allowed 158 yards rushing and only 11 yards passing.
Senior punter
Dennis Zic hit the second longest punt in school history when he banged out a 71-yarder in the second quarter against the Vikings. The long punt record is held by
Brett Robinson, who had a 72-yard boot against Carroll in 1984.
Rooney finished 13 of 21 for 216 yards passing with the three TDs and rushed for 78 yards. Williams was the Titans' leading ground-gainer with 94 yards on 16 carries and Lanter finished with 70 yards on six carries.
The Titans will host Elmhurst at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, in another CCIW game.
