Titan Football Grinds to 24-14 Win Over Millikin

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan's football team got two second half rushing touchdowns from senior Eli Williams and held off Millikin in a 24-14 win at Wilder Field on Saturday, Oct. 30.

The Titans improved to 6-2 this season and 3-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin while Millikin fell to 3-5 overall and 0-5 in league play.

The Titans opened the scoring with a 21 yard field goal by freshman Tim Hollowed with 14:52 to play in the first half but Millikin answered with a touchdown to cap a seven-minute drive. Matt Holmes ran in from a yard out with 7:43 to play and Chris Hunt added the extra point to put the Big Blue ahead, 7-3.

Just three minutes later, with 4:36 to go before intermission, senior Bo Lanter ran in from 15 yards out and Hollowed's kick made the Titans 10-7 leaders.

In the second half, Millikin regained the lead with a 40 yard pass completion from Holmes to Chris Hampton and Hunt's extra point kick made the score 14-10.

But Williams, who finished with 78 yards on 19 carries, scored the first of his two TDs with 2:32 to go in the third on a 3-yard run, capping an eight-play, 50-yard drive and giving IWU a 17-14 edge. The Titans got good field position on that drive after a recovered onside kick.
 
With 6:02 to play in the game, Williams punched it in from 1 yard out and Hollowed had the extra point kick to provide the final margin. The Titans again started that five-play drive from the 17 yard line after recovering a fumble on an errant lateral.

Senior quarterback Brien Rooney was the Titans' leading rusher, gaining 105 yards on 19 carries and he completed 14 of 24 passes for 120 yards. :Lanter finished with 51 yards on 10 carries.
Williams also made four receptions for 17 yards as the Titans gained 359 yards of total offense to 334 yards for Millikin.

Millikin was led in rushing by Dion Wilson, who gained 60 yards on 21 carries while Holmes had 15 completions in 28 attempts for 226 yards and was sacked three times.

Junior linebacker Michael Whittington paced the Titans on defense with eight total tackles and a fumble recovery while junior linebacker Ryan Gresko had six tackles and a quarterback sack. Also with sacks were junior defensive end Chris Rice and junior linebacker Benjamin Houk.

Nick Kronmiller was the leading tackler in the game, accounting for 16 total stops, while Josh Ingold had 10 tackles with a sack of Rooney.

The Titans close their home season with a 1 p.m. game against Carthage next Saturday, Nov. 6.
