IWU Beats Warhawks, 4-1, in NCAA Softball

5/9/2009 6:51:16 PM

Box Score Illinois Wesleyan got three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to post a 4-1 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater at the Bloomington, Ill., First-Round NCAA Tournament game on May 9.

The Titans, now 37-4, will play Coe (36-11) at 12 p.m. Sunday, May 10 and the Kohawks would need to defeat IWU twice to prevent Illinois Wesleyan from earning a trip to the final eight at Montclair, N.J.

The winner of the Bloomington tournament will face the winner of the Salisbury (Md.) site at 5:30 p.m. (Central time) on Friday, May 15. Teams left in that regional tourney heading into Sunday's play include the host school, Bridgewater (Va.) and Emory.

Junior second baseman Lisa Narotsky had two hits with her first home run of the year to stake IWU to a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

After the Warhawks scored a run in the sixth to tie the game, IWU came back with three in the seventh.
It started when senior Natalie Chase led off with her second hit of the game and when Kayla Mahoney laid down a sacrifice bunt, Whitewater pitcher Jessica Stang threw wildly to first base allowing Chase to go to third and Mahoney to second. After Christy Engel struck out, senior Monica Urban delivered a hit off the second base bag that scored Chase. Urban went to second on defensive indifference and Narotsky walked to load the bases for junior shortstop Allison Ward, who grounded to first base and the throw home was dropped by the catcher to allow pinch runner Jen Monaco to score. Val Hackett then singled sharply to right to send Urban home.

Engel improved to 22-3 as she pitched a complete game five-hitter, striking out six and walking no one.
