Titans Win Three to Take CCIW Tournament

IWU Gets Automatic Bid to NCAA Tourney

Illinois Wesleyan (34-4) beat North Central, 1-0, in 10 innings and 5-2 on May 2 to win the championship of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin softball tournament. The Titans beat Carthage, 7-0, earlier in the day.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team claimed the championship of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament and earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III championships. The complete field for the tournament will be announced on Monday, May 4, and the regional will be held at IWU Field.
The 34-4 Titans had to win three games on Saturday and did so by beating Carthage, 7-0 in the first game of the day, then downed North Central twice - 1-0 in 10 innings and 5-2.
In the first game of the day, IWU beat Carthage, 7-0 to stay alive as Christy Engel and Lauren James combined on the one-hitter.
The Titans were staked to four runs in the third when Monica Urban was hit by a pitch and stole second. Allison Ward drew a two-out walk and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Val Hackett singled up the middle, driving home two runs and Kris Lee homered to deep center to knock home two more.
In the second game of the day, Hackett allowed four hits in the first four innings and Engel was perfect in the final six frames against 18 hitters. The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the 10th when Engel reached on a two-out infield single, stole second and scored on a base hit by Urban.
The Titans clinched the title behind Engel and James, who pitched four and three innings, respectively, and three runs in the first inning. Urban reached on a bunt single and stole second. With one out, Ward doubled to left to bat in Urban. After Hackett flied out, Lee drove home a pair with a home run to centerfield.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team won their opener in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament, 1-0, over Carthage on May 1, before losing an 8-6 game in 13 innings against North Central.
Engel allowed five hits and struck out 10 in the seven inning complete game. The Titans managed only four hits in the game and their lone run came in the first inning when Urban led off by being hit by a pitch and stole second, giving her 89 for her career and making her the all-time leader at the school. Lisa Narotsky sacrifice bunted Urban to third. Ward popped out to the third baseman before Hackett walked. Maggie Olson pinch ran for Hackett and stole second base while Urban stole home on throw.
In the second game, IWU trailed 5-1 after two innings before rallying to tie the game with four in the fourth. Lee, who finished with four hits, led off with a single to left field and Sarah Carlson had an infield single. Engel bunted the runners ahead a base before Kayla Mahoney doubled to right center to drive home two. Urban then singled to center and Narotsky drove home two with a single to center.
The Titans took a 6-5 lead on a long Lee homer to left field but the Cardinals tied the game on an unearned run in the seventh.
North Central scored two runs on three hits in the 13th for the win. Engel (16-3) was the losing pitcher, working 11 2/3 innings, striking out nine and inducing 24 ground ball outs.
