BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan softball team improved to 24-3 with nonconference wins over Fontbonne (6-0) and Calvin (6-1) at IWU Field on April 17.
Sophomore
Lauren James scattered six hits and struck out five in five innings as the Titans beat Fontbonne. She improved to 3-0 with the win and freshman
Stephanie Humbert pitched the final inning.
The Titans scored two in the first with runs batted in from
Val Hackett on a sacrifice fly and a double from
Kris Lee. Junior shortstop
Allison Ward had four runs batted in with a two-run double in the third and a two-run home run over the rightcenterfield fence in the fifth.
Freshman
Jessi Bozek was the winning pitcher in game two, striking out four and allowing four hits in her four innings of work. Hackett earned a save with two shutout innings. The Titans scored in the first when
Monica Urban singled, stole second, advanced to third on a single by
Lisa Narotsky and scored when Ward grounded out to second. Lee singled home Narotsky.
IWU tacked on four more runs in the sixth as
Maggie Olson walked and stole second, then scored on a Narotsky single. After a Ward single, Hackett clubbed a long three-run home run to centerfield.
The Titans next play a doubleheader against Elmhurst on "Seniors' Day" Sunday, April 19.
