BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team improved to 5-0 with an 84-80 come-from-behind win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point on November 28 at the Shirk Center.
The Titans, who are tied with Amherst at No. 2 in this week's USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll, trailed the No. 14-ranked Pointers by seven points in the second half then went on a 21-4 run to forge to a 60-50 lead, but the Titans trailed by a 76-70 score with 3:23 left.
Two
Christina Solari free throws and two by
Nikki Preston along with a
Christina Solari basket tied the game at 76-76 with 2:14 to play.
The Titans went ahead 80-78 on a basket by sophomore
Karen Solari with 1:38 to play and when Karen made a steal and got the ball to sister Christina for a layup with 1:21 to play, the Titans led 82-78.
Stevens Point, who fell to 4-1 this season, got within two points at 82-80 on two Andrea Flease free throws with 12 seconds left but two late Preston free throws provided the final cushion for victory.
Preston came off the bench to lead the Titans with 19 points while
Christina Solari had 17 points to go along with 11 boards and six assists.
Karen Solari came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points and make nine steals.
Britta Petersen led the Pointers with 21 points and nine rebounds. Stevens Point commited 34 turnovers as
Karen Solari and
Stacey Arlis were each credited with five steals.
