BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The No. 6 ranked Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team beat the No. 1 ranked Washington U. Bears, 58-53 to claim the title of the IWU Tip-Off Tournament on November 21 at the Shirk Center.

Senior Christina Solari had 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Titans while sophomore Kylie Castans had 11 points and junior Hope Schulte added 10.

The Titans managed only 30 percent shooting for the game (16 of 53) and connected on five of 21 3-point tries (24 percent) but forced the Bears into 31 turnovers and held Washington U. to 32 percent from the field (18 of 56).

Washington U. got 15 points and 13 rebounds from Janice Evans and Jaimie McFarlin scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds as the Bears outrebounded the Titans, 43-35.

The Titans led by as many as 10 points two times in the first half (at 9:38 and 7:25) but the Bears battled back to trail by three at 24-21 at intermission. WU outscored the Titans 9-4 in the first 7:00 of the second half to tie the score at 30-30, the first of four ties, the last one at 47-47.

Illinois Wesleyan made nine free throws in the final 3:14, including five from Schulte and two each from Brittany Hasselbring and Holly Harvey.

IWU is back in action Tuesday, Nov. 24 with a 7 p.m. nonconference game against Olivet Nazarene.
