Titans Defense Blanks Augustana, 7-0

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan defense shutout Augustana, 7-0, in Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday, Oct. 17, to improve to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Illinois Wesleyan defense limited the Vikings (3-3 overall, 1-2 CCIW) to merely 29 yards and two first downs in the first half while accumulating 174 yards and nine first downs. For the game the Vikings managed only 135 yards of total offense, 105 by the rush and 30 passing.

The Titans scored the only points in the game on their first possession of the game with 6:46 to play in the first quarter, a 14-play 64-yard drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass from junior Brien Rooney to sophomore Michael Sloboda for his fifth catch of the year and only catch in the game. Sophomore Michael Fenger added the extra point to make the score 7-0.

Rooney, in his first college start as a replacement for senior Kraig Ladd, completed his first 10 passes in the game (before being intercepted in the second quarter) and finished 16-of-20 for 145 yards with two interceptions. He was also the Titans' leading rusher with 31 yards on 16 carries.

Senior linebacker Nick Nikolich led the Titans with eight total tackles with a quarterback sack. Ryan Jenkins had two quarterback sacks and junior linebacker Dan Rogers also had one. Senior linebacker Mike Kotz made a late interception and Neal Loftus also had an interception for the Titans.

Travis Brubaker rushed for 24 yards on nine carries and Eli Williams carried the ball 12 times for 22 yards as the Titans finished with 220 yards of total offense (75 rushing). Williams and Jack Scalcucci each made five catches for IWU with Williams accounting for 61 yards and Scalcucci 44.

The victory provided IWU head coach Norm Eash his 100th CCIW career victory. It is the first win for IWU at Augustana since 2000 and the first shutout for an Illinois Wesleyan team on the Vikings' field since a 6-0 win in 1924. The last shutout by the Titans over Augie was 21-0 in 1992.

The Titans will play at Elmhurst (4-2, 1-2 CCIW) at 1 p.m. next Saturday, Oct. 24.
