STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A 15-foot jumper by Jack Daly with 1.6 seconds left gave Middlebury College (Vermont) a 77-75 win over No. 18-ranked Illinois Wesleyan on Thursday, Dec. 29, at the 15th annual College of Staten Island "Tournament of Heroes" at the Sports and Recreation Center in Staten Island, N.Y.
The Titans are now 8-3 and will play for third place in the tournament at 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Dec. 30, against Bridgewater College (5-5), a 71-57 loser to Staten Island in Thursday's second game.
Middlebury, among teams receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com poll, improved to 8-1.
The Titans led by as many as 12 points in the first half, taking a 37-25 edge with 5:18 remaining. But the Panthers closed out the half on a 17-6 run and IWU's lead at intermission was 43-42. The game was tied five times in the first 20 minutes.
The Panthers owned the start of the second half, outscoring IWU 17-3 to assume a 59-46 lead with 14:11 left to play. But a steady comeback led to a layup by junior
Jaylen Beasley with 16 seconds left that tied the game at 75-75 before Daly's final shot heroics. A last second effort by IWU was unsuccessful.
Senior
Trevor Seibring, who fouled out of the game with his fifth foul coming on a technical called with 2:10 remaining, led IWU with 17 points with a game-high eight rebounds and junior
Brady Rose added 16. The 17 points from Seibring equalled his season high.
Senior
Alec Bausch added nine points with six rebounds and senior
Andy Stempel handed out a team-high four assists.
"This was a disappointing loss for us," said IWU head coach
Ron Rose in a postgame interview with Eric Stock of WJBC Radio. "Middlebury runs it at you and we didn't adjust defensively. We were ahead by 12 in the first half and didn't close out the half. It was a really physical game. It was hard to play the final couple of minutes without Trevor and I will defend him to the end on a bad call of the technical. I'm sure he did nothing to deserve it."
Matt St. Amour had 23 to lead four Middlebury players in double figure scoring. Daly had 16, Adisa Majors had 14 and Jake Brown added 10.
IWU was guilty of a season-high 21 turnovers compared to 14 for Middlebury and the teams were even at 33 rebounds each.
