Erin McCarey became the second Titan ever to earn All-American status in women's cross country, finishing 21st at the NCAA Division III national championships with a time of 21:39.0 on the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis., on Saturday, Nov. 21.
Running in 29-degree weather on a dry course, McCarey's finish is the best in IWU history as the school's previous Division III All-American was Melinda Sprague, who placed 33rd in the 2005 NCAA meet with a time of 23:00.0. The top 35 racers in the national championship meet earn All-American status.
The individual winner was Cornell College junior Abrah Masterson in a time of 21:23.1 and the team champion was Williams, who placed three runners among the top 25 runners.
McCarey was ninth among individuals competing in the meet not associated with complete teams who were vying for the national title.
NCAA NOTES: McCarey's time of 21:35.9 in the Midwest Regional last week was a school record on a 6,000 meter course ... Illinois Wesleyan has had three women previously qualify for the national championships as individuals - Carmin Beck in 2013, who finished in 116th place in a field of 280 with a time of 22:44.6; Kerry Devitt in 2009, who finished 74th at the national meet; and Sprague in 2005 ... In 2012, the Illinois Wesleyan women's cross country team finished 24th in the national NCAA Division III championship meet as IWU earned an at-large selection for the first time ever. Beck finished 217th in the 2012 national meet with a time of 23:38.0.
